The time has come where I must decide
A decision where peace and upheaval reside
To give up the role upon which so many rely
Results in my lover remaining by my side.
I've vowed to restore, protect and preserve
The People; this is what they deserve.
But my heart no longer pulsates for me alone
For I am not I without my wife, my home.
There was once a time where there'd be no debate
The People first, without a second to contemplate
But my purpose and duty is no longer the same
From the day my eyes set upon her, on her they remain.
The role of protector is what I was bestowed
But isn't love and happiness what I am owed?
Whatever I decide second place is all I know
This is what I wrote at my first creative writing session. I was given the brief of writing about what it meant to be a hero. What intrigued me most was the difficulty in taking on such a role - I imagined a Superman type hero who was devoted to a group of people he vowed to protect but was also devoted to the woman he loved so dearly.
This poem expresses some of the internal conflict that the hero goes through when he is faced with the choice of saving the people he served or the woman that he loves and how exactly he reaches the decision that he makes.
